It Takes a Village….
We are fortunate here in Greater Alexandria to have a very strong sense of support for our older neighbors. From very active City and County Senior Programs to quasi-governmental entities like Senior Services of Alexandria, to multiple Senior Villages, there is no shortage of ways to get involved.
We have long volunteered and sponsored our Senior Villages, which are non-profit groups designed to support Aging in Place. In fact, we have been the largest private sponsor of At Home in Alexandria (AHA), and their most steadfast provider of volunteer services. Pete has been the Master of Ceremonies at the Annual Gala, the driver of the AHA Float in the annual Scottish Walk Parade, and the guy who oversees contractors from a fraud perspective!
For Mount Vernon at Home (MVAH), in South Alexandria, we have done much the same. At their recent Gala, we sponsored, set-up before-hand, cleaned up afterward and ran for ice on a hot Spring day!!!
The Meals on Wheels program has become a regular Thursday/Friday morning routine for us as well – and the residents are so grateful!!! Senior Services of Alexandria (SSA) organizes the program, and Jeffries Catering provides hot and cold meals.
While our focus is Senior neighbors, the littlest residents do not go unnoticed. This year at the Hopkins House daycare, Pete was Santa – but will need more weight to hold the suit up next year!!
As a result of this community involvement, the 2018 National “Outstanding Service Award” was given to Pete by the National Association of Realtors’ Senior Specialist Council.
So get involved! We do!
